Evanescence was founded by Amy Lee and former guitarist Ben Moody. The two of them met at a youth camp in Arkansas, where Moody heard Lee play Meat Loaf's I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That) on a piano.[4]
Then the couple discovers that they are both attracted to Jimi Hendrix and Björk. Then they wrote songs together (the first was "Solitude" by Amy Lee, followed by "Understanding" by Ben Moody, "Give Unto Me" by Amy Lee. Then the fourth song they wrote was "My Immortal"). These songs were then slightly changed lyrically and musically by Ashley Hincher. Therefore the names of both are found in the credit section.
For a time, they couldn't find any other musicians to play with and didn't have the funds to pay for professional assistance, so they couldn't play live music. However, their two songs "Understanding" and "Give Unto Me", managed to enter the local music charts and demand for live performances began to increase. After the group was finally able to perform, they eventually became one of the most popular performers in their area. They performed under several names including "Childish Intentions" and "Stricken," before deciding to go with the name "Evanescence" (which means "fade," or "evaporate like smoke"). Amy once said that she liked this name because it was mysterious and dark and left a deep impression on one's mind. Therefore he wanted this name.
