In 1990, along with their first drummer, John Kiffmeyer aka Al Sobrante, Green Day recorded their first album, 39 / Smooth. But in the same year, Tre Cool replaced drummer John Kiffmeyer who came out because he wanted to continue college. Tré Cool later began contributing to Green Day's second album, Kerplunk, and has been a permanent member ever since. Green Day's breakthrough album, Dookie, released in 1994, managed to get the diamond status of the RIAA and bring Green Day to the top of their careers. However, contrary to Dookie, the next three Green Day albums, Insomniac, Nimrod, and Warning respectively, failed to succeed like Dookie. Although Insomniac and Nimrod managed to get platinum status and Warning gained gold status, the three albums actually showed their overall popularity dropped dramatically.
