The root of the word is ʾadhina أَذِنَ meaning “to listen, to hear, be informed about”. Another derivative of this word is ʾudhun (أُذُن), meaning “ear”.

I bear witness that there is no deity but God (2x)
{ʾašhadu ʾan lā ʾilāha ʾillā -llāhu}
أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّٰهُ
I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of God (2x)
{ʾašhadu ʾanna Muḥammadan rasūlu -llāhi}
أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰهِ
Hasten to the prayer (Salah) (2x)
