The tradition of celebrating the New Year on January 1 originated in Rus' in 1700. This date was appointed by Peter the Great, who was ruling at that time. Before that, the beginning of the year was celebrated in the country on September 1, and until 1492, the New Year celebration fell on March 1.

January 1 became an official holiday for the first time in 1897. With the advent of Soviet power, many traditions, including the Christmas tree, were abolished, and in the period from 1930 to 1947, January 1 was a standard working day. The status of a day off was returned to him in 1947, but for a long time only the first day of the year was a holiday. Russians got the opportunity to rest for two consecutive days in 1992, and in 1995 five-day New Year holidays appeared, actually stretching for 7-10 days.
